Please do us all a favour and be more like the United Kingdom (preferably more like London). I know you try to be cool and "with it" by scooping up whatever trends and hand-me-downs big sister America is letting you get away with but what you haven't realized is that you're looking to the wrong fashion nation. American fashion is baby food compared to European fashion and doesn't even stand a chance against the style and creativity that oozes off EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the glorious, grundgy-yet-sophisticated, amazingness that is London. Street style for days. Every where you look there is a fashion goddess in an outfit so perfect you can't help but stare. EVERYONE looks freaking epic all. the. time. It's like being effortlessly stylish is embedded in a Londoner's DNA.

I know, I can hear you now... "but we are Canadians, how can we compete with that?" It's hard for us to get pass America and the besties/popular-girl-fake-friendship she has with European fashion. America gets all the goodies first, wears the shit out of it, then dilutes it until it's fast-fashion knock-off shit. Then it's passed on to us. HOW BLOODY BRILLIANT...

Yes. I know. It's not our fault. We're just not as popular as America. Europe doesn't really know we exist... We will get her attention soon enough. For now Canada, all I ask is that you do yourself a favour and look to Europe for fashion inspiration. Get pass the bitchy sister and the lame stuff she's been giving you. Be creative, be yourself, be effortlessly stylish like our friends across the pond!

Tell American Vogue you need to see other people and give British or French Vogue a call. You don't know what you're missing.

Lots of love,

Elayne Millar

a concerned fashion-loving Canadian living in the UK.

----------------

Had to get it off my chest. For those of you who don't know, I've moved once again and am now living in the United Kingdom - Cambridge, Cambridgeshire to be exact, which is a 45 minute train ride away from the fashion Mecca city of London! OH EM GEE.

Every time I visit London I come home with bags and bags of glorious new outfits, pieces, and/or accessories and the nasty foot-long receipts that come along with them... (curse you Pound...you evil Canadian-Dollar-eating monster.)

Here is an outfit made up of pieces I found during my last visit. My new favourite items: TURTLENECKS AND SKORTS! Skort, Skort, Skort - best word in the dictionary.
As annoying as Toronto's fashion people want to pretend these bloggers/photographers are, the reality is we all secretly love them and are almost never actually annoyed when they want to take our photograph. Pfff saying no to free press? I don't think so. Possible new readers/followers? Come on now. That's just stupid. So here are some photos of me taken by some of Canada's fashion blogs and magazines such as shedoesthecity.com, Indecent Xposure, MTV Flora, FASHION, FAJO, and FLARE Magazine.

Here's a shot from style and fashion blog shedoesthecity.com taken at the Holt Renfrew after party on Day 1 of WMCFW. Just hanging with some of my big-time Toronto fashion media friends. You know, just chillin. The party was great! Day 2 was a blur... I think I was working on the Laura Siegel behind-the-scenes feature I wrote for the National Post that day so I didn't spend much time at the tents. The feature turned out really well (after all my bloody hard work....) and I got a chance to hang out backstage and catch all the last minute, heat-of-the-moment runway action. I even snagged a little video of our girl Laura when it was all over. Check it out here!

Day 3 was a fun day of live blogging for the National Post. I basically had to run around from show to show speed tweeting and posting ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. It was mad. But I quickly got the hang of things and started posting some pretty witty stuff. (I'm not a Twitter person.. like AT ALL... so I was pretty proud of myself when I got email props from my editors back at the Post) Anyway, while running around like a frantic fashion chicken sans tête I posed for FAJO Magazine and once again for shedoesthecity.com.
Day 5 was a blessing (YES IT WAS OVER! I COULD BREATHE AGAIN!) and a curse (NOOOO IT'S OVER WAHHHH! I HATE REAL LIFE). It was the last day of Toronto's World MasterCard Fashion week F/W 2013 and my entire wardrobe was sprawled out on the floor of my apartment. Sorry, but when your job is to get your Fash'On and strut around Fashion Week trying to look important, there is NO TIME for cleaning or putting away clothes. On Day 5 I was running out of outfit options... so I went with this one. MTV thought it was cute and grabbed a photo of me on my way to the Travis Taddeo show. They also asked me to be a part of their "Favourite Street-styler's mixtape". Pretty cool stuff.
It was published in the Weekend Post back in April and I totally forgot to blog about it...oops. It never made it on to the website, which is kinda weird because everything normally goes straight to the web these days and little is ever actually filtered out. The story must have just been overlooked (sad face). But whatever. My story made it to print in one of Canada's biggest national newspaper, if not the biggest (nice job Layne.) So I don't feel too bad about it. Since there isn't an online link, I guess everyone will just have to enjoy the lovely photos I took of the article in the paper. If you're feeling adventurous you can try and zoom in/piece the paragraphs together. Bahaha have fun!

Fun tidbits from the piece I found floating around in my notes:

"In the 1960s, the best example of a more modern muse was Andy Warhal’s Edie Sedgewick who became not only the artist’s source of inspiration but a living logo of the time period.

Along with with the job of provoking creativity, an official muse often also provided her designer with feedback and criticism. Together they formed a collaborative relationship and produced work that was true to both their artistic visions. Fashion’s muses were people who were consistent in their personal style and were not influenced by trend."

....

"Back in the 90s and early 2000s Isabelle Blow, British socialite and magazine editor, was a famous muse to both hat designer Philip Treacy and fashion designer Alexander McQueen. By making Treacy’s extravagant hats part of her everyday flamboyant outfits, she single-handedly propelled the otherwise unknown milliner into designer stardom. Since his collaboration with Blow, Treacy has designed hats for several Haute Couture collections like Chanel, Givenchy, etc, as well as for celebrities like Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker. He also designed 36 hats for members of the royal family, all of which were worn on the day of the Royal Wedding. The most notable being the large pink bow-like hat worn by Princess Beatrice of York. Like Treacy, late designer Alexander McQueen also used Blow as a source of creative inspiration. Not only was Blow the first person to show undying support of his work by purchasing his entire Central Saint Martins graduation collection in 1995, together Blow and McQueen created the label’s outlandish aesthetic.

Like Blow, Lady Amanda Harlech was a muse to two of the fashion world’s biggest names in the 1990s, John Galliano and Karl Lagerfeld. The then young British socialite and fashion writer first worked with Galliano in the days where the young designer was just starting out and had to rely on Harlech no only for inspiration but for financial support. Together they designed the garments that won Galliano the coveted position as head designer at Dior. Soon after her designer had moved up in the world, Harlech fell upon another man in need of a muse, Chanel’s Karl Lagerfeld. Harlech and Lagerfeld became inseparable and worked together for years designing fashion masterpieces for the French label. He received international fame and fortune, while she, his creative consultant and muse remained his silent partner."

It was a photo of a two-page spread interview in Company Magazine UK. And guess whose stupid little face was plastered on it... Mine! Woah!?! I was in the February 2013 issue of a big UK fashion magazine!? Too cool! So obviously, I had to run out into the cold Toronto-winter streets in search of issues of Company mag for my parents and my super cute and always-proud-of-me Portuguese grandmother. After visits to 4 or 5 different magazine stores, I finally got my hands on it!
It's October, which means fall fashion is here! YAY! Layering! Fall colours! Fall fabrics, patterns and actual clothing! Yes, yes, yesssss, don't get me wrong, I love the summer and its trends. I even wrote a fun summer trend report a few months back for the Post. You can check it out here! It's all about the crazy music festival attire we all love to flaunt around in during the hot days of summer.
Actually, it's a good read for right now. Think of it as a checklist of the things you should be putting away to make room for all the fall loveliness! Bye crochet denim mini shorts... see you next festival season :(

I love the heat and the tans and the shorts and sun dresses, and the lazy relaxation of it all but lets be honest... summer fashion is fine, fun and okay. Fall fashion, however is EXCITING AND WILD AND GIVES YOU SO MUCH MORE TO WORK WITH! (Can you sense my excitement?...I'll try to tone it down not to offend my booty-short and side-boob loving readers. I feel you guys. Don't worry.)
Designers Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy took full advantage of the animal kingdom with a fur-and-leather heavy, street style-inspired line. The biker grunge collection went beyond the usual fur-trimmings we've been seeing so far on the F/W 2013 runways of Toronto Fashion Week.

Yeah, like 6 months ago... If you don't (haha, which I'm sure no one does....) feel free to give my old post a read. Here's a little story of how it went!

The night of the shoot was a rather hectic one. I had spent the entire day pulling clothes and collecting accessories, etc etc. On top of all that I had to clean my nasty apartment because Lookbook Cookbook creator and photographer Jessica Milan and I decided to have the shoot in my tiny closet of a home. After what seemed like hours of preparation I had my outfits down and ready for shooting.

Styling the shoot was a piece of cake ( haha pun totally INTENDED). Since I've been modeling for LBCB for quite some time now, I was very familiar with the type of look Jess wanted. All my outfits were super casual and I made sure to keep them as LBCB-looking as possible aka super big on the high-waisted shorts, chunky jewelry and bright lipsticks. Most of the clothing used in the shoot was pulled from my very own closet and the jewelry was graciously loaned to me by my friend Corrine Anestopoulos of BIKO. If you are unfamiliar Corrine's amazing designs take a second and check out a post I wrote about her a few months back. She's one talented little lady.

I can't remember just how many looks I did in the end, but here are the ones Jess posted so far. First up is my caramel smoothie look. I'm wearing a nasty old black beanie, my tiger cut-off tee from Brandy Melville, an American Apparel lace bra, (can't remember what I was wearing as bottoms... maybe I was naked. Who knows.) fuchsia Smashbox lipstick, BIKO necklace and bracelet and Tiffany rings.

I started working for Folio as the Fashion editor and was then promoted to Editor-in-Chief so obviously I have a soft spot for the fashion section. I take Folio's fashion pages super seriously and so I made sure to have the VERY BEST TEAM for this Spring 2013 issue. I wanted this issue's fashion editorial to be perfect. There was no way I was going to let a magazine with my name on it have some loser catalogue-worthy shit photography or tacky no-name designer outfits. I want Vogue or Vanity Fair! I want HIGH FASHION DAMMIT! And so I called in my three pros, Folio photographer Joseph Hammond, fashion editor and stylist Christian Allaire, and makeup artist Christina Ciddio
My darling Chris pulled from the studios of some of Ryerson's most important fashion alumni. He got amazing pieces from Lucian Matis, LABEL, Amanda Lew Kee, and Rachel Sin. Using his amazing networking skills and fashion connections, Chris also managed to get the people from Ann Taylor to provide us with shoes and Artifacts Jewelry to lend us their amazing one-of-a-kind vintage pieces.
I suck at pumping out blog posts. And yes, I realize that blogging about Fashion Week almost two months after the fact takes away from the newsiness of it all but come on people, I'm a busy girl. With the constant running around and hours and hours of fashion writing for the Post, I just haven't had the chance to pay attention to my lovely little blog. Fear not! I now have some free time and I will use it to bring my readers up-to-date on all my fashion adventures! Yaaayyyy I'M EXCITED!

First things first, remember that National Post feature I wrote about the behind-the-scenes of the Laura Siegel runway show? Well if you don't, scroll down a bit.. it's all there. During the commotion and last minute fixes backstage I managed to record a little video of all the fun. Check it out! (Please excuse the terrible quality.. I have zero knowledge of techie things like how to upload a video...pffffff I'm an idiot I guess)

Isn't backstage stressful? Who knew, right? And ISN'T LAURA ADORABLE THOUGH! Congratulations girl! Everything worked out in the end and all was amazing.

Day 2 of Fashion Week was definitely super fun. Not only did I get to run around backstage with the Laura Siegel crew, I had a pretty amazing view of the Sid Neigum show from my front seat. I wrote a review of Sid's crazy Matrix-meets-Samurai fall collection for the National Post. It was published in this weekend's paper and seeing it in print made me want to cry. Yeah, you'd think seeing your published work would get old but I'm still such a noob that seeing my byline in black ink on paper still makes my heart fall to my stomach.
Anyway, the point of this post is to fill you in on all the behind-the-scene stuff from behind-the-scenes. Funny, isn't it. There's a behind-the-scenes of a behind-the-scenes pieces? Yes sir. You bet your ass there is. If you haven't had a chance to read my fly-on-the-wall piece about Laura Siegel and her makeup and hair team you can find it on the National Post website (or in print wooohooo! that is, if you still have a copy of this weekend's Post lying around the house)

The first part of the story took place a week before fashion week at the Maybelline and Redken hair and makeup trials. Basically what happens is the lead makeup artist and lead hair stylist for Toronto fashion week schedule a meeting with each designer to decide on the hair and makeup for their runway show. Laura Siegel's trial day was Monday March 11 and I was there being a nosey journalist. Here are some photos from that day at the studio.
Part two of my piece took place backstage at the Laura Siegel runway show at fashion week. Basically what happened was at 3ish I showed up backstage and everyone on the Laura team was running around like crazy getting all the models ready for the show, which was to start at 4p.m. I continued my nosy journalist-ness and ran around trying to catch some great frantic quotes from people. And oh boy did I get some. (Didn't use most of them due to word count restrictions..too bad) For your enjoyment - some shots of fashion craziness!
Even though I'm still working on runway recaps and so on I've decided to put some time aside for the blog. Yay blogging!

Here goes nothing...

Day 1 of Toronto's World MasterCard Fashion week opened up with yet another amazing collection by Chloe comme Parris. The Gordon sisters sent a 90s-grunge inspired line down their fall 2013 runway and yet again I wanted to own every single piece of it. Every little detail, down to the punk-rock braids in the models' hair, was perfect. If for some reason you have no idea what I'm talking about and you have yet to set your eyes on the beauty that is the Chloe comme Parris fall line, please do so now. KayThanksBye.
After the CCP show, I took to my front row seat and enjoyed Kimberley Newport-Mimran's Pink Tartan collection. Interested in 1950's bombshell housewives? When Day 1 came to an end, I headed over to the Holts Opening Night Party on the third floor of the Bloor and Bay Street flagship store. At first, I didn't want to go. I thought I'd be out of place. I was wrong! Hint: if you're ever invited to cocktail party hosted by a billion dollar department store like Holts just GO! Yes, the crowd was slightly older (the Toronto fashion industry's main people..UM HI!) but EVERYTHING WAS FREE.
Older people have money. Young noobies like myself don't. So? Get in on the free food, drinks and networking opportunities! The Holts Opening Night Party was so fun and I made a ton of new friends while stuffing my face with pastries, oysters, mini grilled cheeses, and free cocktails!
Momma's proud!MY WORK WAS ACTUALLY PUBLISHED IN PRINT THIS WEEEEK!

There. I got it all out. I'll stop yelling now. IT'S JUST SO EXCITING! After years of writing articles for student papers and magazines, and magazine websites, I finally got an feature story published in an actual national newspaper. One of my favourite university profs once told me that your first print piece should be something you treasure and that it's totally not a loser thing to frame it and put it up on your wall as inspiration. I might just do that. I'd need to find a big frame though. It's kind of a full page spread (bahahhahahh!!!).
I had originally wanted to post this announcement with a Spring 2013 trend recap but since I'm drowning in Fall 2013 stuff (fashion calendars are so annoying...it's almost spring and they have me studying turtle necks, leather pants and wool coats..) I just simply don't have the time. Maybe next week?
Toronto Fashion Week is back for another F/W season, which means I will be a busy bee all over again. This time though, I'm affiliated with a major newspaper! No more rushing around to make sure I get a good seat by the front row. I AM THE FRONT ROW. I can now casually walk in late and straight to my lovely reserved National Post seat next to whatever major blogger/editor-in-chief/Canadian celebrity. Have I mention that my life is pretty good right now?

This week TFW jumpstarted with The ShOws, the two-day runway event that hosts Canadian-born international designers/design houses like Comrags, Jean-Pierre Braganza, Tanya Taylor, Steven Tai, and Jeremy Laing. I was sent to cover Day 2 of the ShOws (the better of the two-days in my opinion--- Jeremy Laing is so effing cool) for the National Post.

Once I got to the event space at the Andrew Richard Designs studio, I was greeted with a goody bag of complimentary makeup, hair products and candies; all the Vitamin Water I could drink; and an array of cute mini snacks on sticks. Oh and obviously, since we're so bloody Canadian, there were Timbits and Timmy's coffee for all to enjoy.
After stuffing my face with freebies (as usual) I made my way to the runway room, took my seat and watched the Tanya Taylor show. While the models marched down the runway in the designer's 1960s schoolgirl-inspired garments, I was fumbling around with my notebook, pen and Iphone. You'd think after three years of doing runway reviews, I would have figured out how to do this with some kind of grace... Nope. As the last model made her way backstage, I had finally gotten myself together. I managed to get some good photos of the line while scribbling in my notebook at the same time.
In between the shows I was running in and out of backstage. Here are a few shots from behind-the-scenes. I also interview the lead hair and makeup stylist about the looks for each of the shows. If I'm not crazy busy in the next few days I'll make sure to get some sort of beauty post up because honestly, those guys have some great hair and makeup tips.

I have some amazing news. I have (almost) officially graduated from Ryerson University's school of Journalism and I am (almost) now set loose on the fashion world to report the shit out of it! I say 'almost' because until I get that lovely diploma in June, Ryerson still technically owns me... BUT with that said, I no longer have to go to lectures or write tests or do lame class assignments. I've upgraded in life! I am now the newest edition to the National Post's Arts & Life section - specifically the Style section! I am working closely with my editor, Toronto's fashion and style guru, Nathalie Atkinson and getting as many byline as possible and it's totally amazing.

Yes, I am unpaid. And yes, I have a cubicle. But WHATEVER, right? I'm working the fashion beat for one of the biggest newspapers in North American! Guess what my very first assignment was... "Elayne, could you do a write up of Paris Fashion Week? It's due at 5p.m. Thanks" My response: "Ummm HECK YES!"

Walked in the door and saw this sign in the lobby. I was so excited I had to take a photo... the secretary thought I was an idiot... It's okay though. I'm cool with it

For your enjoyment, my review of the top trends off the Paris Fashion Week F/W2013 runway and my first National Post byline. My family was proud. My mother printed it out and framed it. Life is good right now.
That's all. Our relationship is this: she feeds me amazing gluten-free, vegan baked goods and I go sugar-high mental in front of the camera for her. It's been working so far, so I don't see a problem with it.

Her recipes are mind-blowing and if you've never heard of her amazing food/fashion blog, make sure to check it out here! Below are the results of my latest sugar-high. Yes, I'm modeling a disgustingly amazing caramel smoothie. If you love all things lovely and sweet and salt - at the same time! - try out this recipe! It's honestly to die for.

SIDE NOTE: This shoot was actually my first time styling for Jessica. I pulled all the clothes and jewelry and put together the looks for our model Hailey and myself. It was a great time and I have a whole bunch of behind-the-scenes stuff to post but I'm going to hold on to them for a bit, so stay tuned for more about my adventures styling a LBCB shoot! (I'll also make sure to explain my looks and where everything came from) For now here's me and a caramel smoothie. Oh baby, food pooooooorn!
First off we have the launch of David Beckham's new ad campaign for his underwear line. Woohooo more half-naked photos of Becks! And guess what, now there's a video! What more can a girl ask for! It's nasty, cold and miserable in February - at least now we have sexy David photos to warm us up. (oh baby oh baby... I went there. HA!) If you have no idea about the Beck-man's lovely undie line check out my latest Dress to KILL article. It's just a little blurb, but there are photos to enjoy.
Also coming up this month is H&M's new Rock'n'Roll inspired campaign. Mick Jagger's beautiful model daughter Georgia May Jagger will be the face of the fashion-meets-rock line of edgy 60's-meets-90's biker-esque clothing. (Confusing, I know.. I've been writing way too much recently and have basically forgotten how to describe things. Welcome to my lazy world of "-meets-". Deal with it.) The campaign was shot by celebrity fashion photographer Terry Richardson, so expect good things. For more info and photos check out my DTK article here.
The designer-duo didn't actually show their Spring/Summer 2013 line during the designated World Mastercard week of fashion wonders. Instead, they opted to hold off till November and do their own thing in Toronto's cobblestoned Distillery District. I wrote a little something about their line for DTK so take a look here if you're interested in sexy form-fitted dresses for spring 2013. Also, their wonderful PR people put together a fun behind-the-scenes video for us, which is also up on the DTK website.
The PR team also took the time to personally send me a box of goodies as a thank you for the interview. Receiving packages full of cute stuff is always super exciting, especially when all the cute stuff is FREE (mouhahhahah!). The Greta team collaborated with 5Gum so now I'm basically swimming in the stuff. Good thing I'm a gum person. I also got a great lipstick. It's bright pink - perfect for spring. Thanks guys!
For those who are just tuning in, LBCB is an amazing food/fashion blog that I was given the chance to model for. I posted the two other looks I did for Jess back in the day and if you're interested, feel free to check them out here and here. I modelled with key lime cupcakes and an even better peanut butter chocolate banana pop. SO GOOD.

Because I've been quite the blog-slacker these past few months I forgot to post my most recent LBCB shots. I modelled Jess' crispy chocolate rice square and chocolate covered raisin clusters. I had a great time... as you can tell from my super smiley face haha.
In more recent news, Jess has asked me to style the next Lookbookcookbook photo-shoot So stay tuned for that! I'll be styling the entire thing on my own and I'll be doing some more modelling as well.
Yesterday, Toronto had a little taste of Montreal-winter. It was cold and it snowed and Toronto had a melt down. Everyone freaked out, traffic was ridiculous and the weather was THE topic of conversation. It was -16ish, (baby food for a Montrealer like myself) and yes it was nasty and yes everyone had to pull out the parkas, mitts and beanies and yes it was uncomfortable but WHATEVER it's Canada. All this to say that once I made it through the storm** and got to the office (I work for the Ryersonian now woohoo! Final year internship!) I was pulled aside by the RyersonianTV manager and told that I had 15 minutes to prepare a script because I was the day's weather girl.

And the Weather Girl award goes to....anyone but Elayne.

AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPEND..... pure awkward elayne-style improv... how embarrassing. There are so many things wrong with this newscast. It's kinda really funny. Enjoy!
Yes Please!

In late November I was sent to the Issey Miyake launch party for the brand's new Spring/Summer 2013 fragrance, Pleats Please. The super exclusive press party was held in a gallery at the gorgeous Gardiner Museum on Queen's Park - a perfect location to unveil a fragrance that was designed not only to encompass beautiful scents, but fashion, dance, movement and geometry as well. Unlike the brand's original fragrance, which has a more nature-ish Japanese-raw-material scent, Pleats Please is young, sweet, and fun.

It's definitely targeted to a younger more free-spirited audience and after using it for the past few months, I must say, I really do like it. I've always been a more musky perfume person but Pleats Please and it's sweetness just caught hold of my heart strings. If you want to learn more about the Japanese fashion house visit their site. I urge you to read up on their pleated garments -- really really cool.

Anyway go to the Bay/Sephora and give Pleats Please a sniff. It's good stuff.

More about that launch party! The Issey Miyake PR girls are pretty freaking good at their job. Not only did they walk around in the Issey Miyake signature pleated kimonos (in gorgeous bright colours for S/S 2013) they were extremely sweet and had prepared an amazing dessert table! There were cupcakes, candies, and all sorts of fun things all in pink and orange (to match the fragrance's box colours)
Since I'm a huge baby and all-for free fashion stuff - especially when it's freaking cupcakes <33333 - I was all up in that dessert table. If it wasn't obvious that I was the youngest one there when I walked in, it was definitely obvious when the other fashion women noticed me sitting by the table, stuffing my little chinese food take-away box with all the goodies I could get my hands on. Yeah whatever. They're just jealous..
Because I'm a big loser procrastinator and still haven't gotten my Toronto Fashion Week S/S 2013 reviews up (three month late...and still counting) I thought it would be nice to get these photos out there for those who care to see what I wore. This season, I was photographed by a few big name magazines for my fashion week outfits. So flattered. Take a look!

Pre-Fashion Week at The Collections - Day 2

Once the streetstyle photographers caught wind of the secret runway shows going on at The Burroughs Building on Queen West, they were all over that shit. Day 2 at The Collections was just like Toronto Fashion Week - street photographers everywhere. Here's a not-so-flattering photo of me courtesy of FASHION magazine. I'm the "and a Nirvana t-shirt" part of the headline (lol).
Toronto World MasterCard Fashion Week begins - Day 1

I missed most of the first day due to boring stuff like school, seminars and lecture (pff education..) so I don't have any nice photographs of my full outfit. Toronto Fashion Week - Day 3

Day 3 was another one of those I-have-to-sprint-over-after-class days so I only made it in time for the last two shows of the night. I did find a photo of my last-minute outfit on shedoesthecity.com. Toronto Fashion Week - Day 4

On Day 4 I boho-ed out in a super micro-mini lace dress from Urban Outfitters. It was so short I had to tape it to my thighs so I could walk around without mooning the entirety of the Canadian fashion population. Good times though. Toronto Fashion Week - Day 5

By the time Day 5 came around I was fashion dead. My appartement was a mess - clothes, makeup and accessories EVERYWHERE and I was totally out of outfit ideas. I was exhausted and done with trying to look cute. So, I went for the dress. The dress is always an easy out. It's one article, it's fast, and it always looks good. I had to run home from school, dress myself in 10 minutes (impossibleeeeee) and run out the door to get myself to The Collections' loft on Queen St. in time for the opening show. Since I was a frantic mess when I got home (with greasy wind-blown hair thanks to my lovely bicycle) I just hairsprayed the shit out of it and pulled it into one of those slick-ish messy ponytails. I had never done it before so I was kinda taking a risk but I guess it all turned out okay in the end. Once my face and hair looked kinda presentable I ran over to my closet and pulled the one piece I knew I wanted to wear, my black Zara maxi skirt, and threw it on. Then I was screwed.. I couldn't find a top. EVERYTHING was in the wash. I was totally unprepared. So I put on whatever top was nearest to me on the floor. It happened to be the gray Brandy Melville top I had bought a few days earlier with a cut-out skull back. When I finally threw myself towards the front door, shoes in hand, I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror. I was basically goth-city. Whatevs. It was Fashion Week.
I got to see the three best lines of last season all in one day. It was a great intro to what ended up being almost a full month of fashion. The hard-hitting lines were sent down the runway first and all I could think was : dessert before dinner? Amazing.

Laura Siegel
First to hit that hardwood runway of the gorgeous loft space, were the models of Laura Siegel, all of whom were Bohemianed-out in drapey earthy fabrics and large beaded statement jewelry. The S/S2013 line kept its LS pattern-loving, flowy-fabric, layering-love flare and there was not one piece that I didn't want to immediately have in my possession. The desert-inspired pallet of neutrals and greens was paired with overzied straw hats, beautiful wood beaded jewelry and some super cute backpacks. This collection is for anyone who loves layering, crochet pieces, and flowy maxi skirts and dresses. My very favourite piece of the Siegel collection is the pair of drop-crotch crochet pants. So perfect for the beach. (What a terrible thing to say...It's currently 5 degrees outside... Damn you Toronto.)
Chloe comme Parris

The Gordon sisters kill me. I sat front row with my mouth open the entire time and if you were in my position you would have had the same loser expression. The line was just as gorgeous as ALWAYS. The girls kept the CCP edge with long flowy silky maki pieces and badass jewelry and accessories. There were also a few mansuit-inspired pieces that were fierce beyond words and accessorized with chains to give them that extra little grungy detail. The collection highlights were most definitely the print pieces (the patterns at CCP are always next level. Think dark, Victorian-meets-kaleidoscope tapestry) and the use of blush pink leather. A show-stopper : the pink biker jacket. As soon as that thing came down the runway, phones went flying up and Instagram, Twitter and Facebook suffered from a major seizures

Here's a little runway video clip I snagged from the front row. (yay IPhone!)
